Titans’ girls track wins division

The last two years were down years in terms of the high standards that the Toll Gate girls’ track team had previously set over the past decade.

Two seasons ago, the Titans lost their first meet in eight years, en route to a 6-2 record in Division I-Bayha.

That was followed by another 6-2 season last year – a great season for most teams, but Toll Gate has come to expect perfection.

This season, there was some shuffling of teams, which landed the Titans in Division I-Headley, as opposed to Bayha.

The shuffle worked out in the Titans’ favor, as they capped off a perfect 8-0 season with wins over South Kingstown and Westerly on Monday.

However, the biggest wins came last Wednesday, when the Titans were able go get by Classical and Pilgrim – two of their biggest competitors within their division.

The Purple were previously unbeaten, before Toll Gate handed them their first loss of the season. After the Titans were able to do that, it was a forgone conclusion that they would take the division on Monday.

The division title marked Toll Gate’s first since the 2011-12 season. This year’s seniors were freshmen that year – a year in which the Titans captured the Bayha Division Meet title and the Medium Schools Class Meet championship.

The Titans put together a successful season with some of its veterans and some new talent, as well.

Toll Gate has been led by Erika Pena, who has dominated several events over the course of the year.

Two other key contributors have been Courtney Jacobsen and Ani Armenakyan in the weights, who have both done extremely well according to head coach Norm Bouthillier.

Two juniors – Ashley Chin and Heather Allstrom – have been mainstays in the sprinting events this season for the Titans.

Other key contributors have been Nora Hall, Jessica Cawley,

AnnMarie Martella, freshman Madison Smith, thrower Paige Carmichael and Skylar Loeb in the hurdles.

“We have a lot of big guns and some really great throwers,” Bouthillier said.

The Titans will have the divisional meet coming up, but they have their sights set on winning the Medium Schools Class Meet, which is still two weeks away.

“Our goal is to win the class meet in two weeks,” Bouthillier said.

One of Toll Gate’s stiffest competitors will be its intra-city rival – Pilgrim. The Pats took the championship at the Medium Schools Class Meet last season. Despite registering just a 5-3 record in dual meets this season, Bouthillier knows that Pilgrim will be there until the end.

The class meets will be held on Feb. 7 at the Providence Career and Technical Academy. That will also be the venue for the state meet – which is set for Feb. 21.

For now, though, Bouthillier and the Titans will enjoy their divisional title.

Bouthillier couldn’t have been happier for a great group of athletes.

“It’s been a very fun season,” Bouthillier said. “The kids have worked extremely hard this year. They’ve remained upbeat and it’s been infectious throughout the team.”
