Titans grab two wins right away

The Toll Gate girls’ basketball team has already nearly matched its win total from last season, winning its first two games to open the year 2-0.

The Titans won three games last year, but defeated Block Island 43-26 on Saturday and then beat Hope 33-12 on Tuesday.

Hannah McNulty led the way with 16 points against BI, while Holly Gerber-George added eight. Marisa Giard scored seven points, and eight different Titans scored.

Against Hope, Toll Gate used a dominant defensive effort to cruise to the win. The Titans were up 19-2 at halftime. McNulty again led the way offensively with 16 points, while five other Titans found the score sheet.

Toll Gate’s next game is scheduled for today at Middletown at 7 p.m.

Pilgrim is also off to a strong start this season, defeating Mt. Pleasant 48-10 in its league opener on Tuesday.

Hannah Page was the Pats’ leading scorer with 16 points. Alex Annotti scored nine and Erin Plowman and Crystal Armstrong each had six. To go with those four, four other players also scored. The team led 29-3 at halftime.

The Pats are at Narragansett today at 6 p.m.

Vets, meanwhile, is 1-1 so far on the season. It beat Block Island 41-36 in overtime last Friday behind 18 points from Kat Raposo and 15 from Victoria Ferri. The ’Canes’ loss came on Tuesday, 46-27 to Central. Raposo had 11 points in defeat.

Vets will travel to Hope on Friday for a 4 p.m. tip.

Pats, ’Canes open season with victories

On Monday, the Pilgrim boys’ basketball team held off a St. Patrick 53-45 to begin its Division III season at 1-0.

Chris Duchesneau scored a team-high 15 points, and Ethan Schneider added 12. Zach Drake had six points, and Elijah Dressel had five. The Pats led by seven at halftime and never looked back.

Pilgrim hosts Davies Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Warwick Vets also got off to a 1-0 start in D-III, defeating Davies 52-29 on Tuesday. The ’Canes are scheduled to be back in action on Friday, hosting Moses Brown.

The Toll Gate boys’ team dropped its D-III opener 55-38 to Moses Brown on Monday. Joe Gasbarro scored 14 points in the loss.

The Titans were scheduled to host Paul Cuffee School on Wednesday and then host Johnston today at 7 p.m.
