Titans off to hot start

When Tamra Gallo took over as the head coach of the Toll Gate boys’ tennis team back in 2012, the program was in a tough spot, with very little experience.

The Titans went on to finish that season 0-16 in Division I that year, forcing a move down to Division II for the 2013 season.

The move was instantly beneficial, seeing better results right away.

Toll Gate went 5-7 that year, before registering a 5-6 record last season.

Fast forward to this year, and it seems that the Titans have finally been able to put it all together.

Toll Gate is off to a 4-2 start – its best start since 2008, when it captured the Division II title following a 12-4 regular season. That 2008 season is the last time that the Titans posted a winning record.

In Gallo’s fourth year, she is confident that this is the best group that she’s had.

“I have an awesome group of kids,” Gallo said. “The kids have developed into solid players in all aspects of the game.”

The Titans will be getting a big lift in the coming weeks, as well.

A Second Team All-Division selection in 2014, Brandyn Garrahy, will be returning to the team after missing the beginning weeks of the season. His return will make Toll Gate’s depth that much greater, in addition to giving it a proven talent in the No. 1 singles spot.

Everyone else will be able to move back a slot, making the team that much stronger.

Other singles players that have been performing well early on have been junior Nick Mattioli, senior captain Hunter Heberg, junior Duncan Hart and freshman Will Fox.

Mattioli, who has been playing as the No. 1 player, has really developed his power game according to Gallo, and has become extremely consistent.

Heberg is another strong player, and is the only one on the roster that has played for four years.

Fox may drop down into doubles to make room for Garrahy in singles, but Gallo is confident that Fox will perform well wherever he’s placed in the lineup.

The top doubles team for the Titans this year has been seniors Brennan Carson and Collin Gleavey.

The second team of Jake King and Tuan Pham has worked extremely well together early on, as their styles of play complement each other perfectly.

The third team is senior Yanghuang Lu and sophomore Tyler Merrow.

With Fox more than likely dropping into doubles, those teams are subject to change – a luxury that Gallo has with the team’s depth that she hasn’t had in the past.

“I see this as the most solid team that we’ve had,” Gallo said. “There’s no drop off. The variation between players one through eight isn’t nearly as vast as it has been in the past.”

With the weather in the winter, the season had a late start, making it tough for the Titans to prepare for the first matches of the season.

In fact, Toll Gate only practiced twice prior to its first match of the season. Because of the late start, Gallo is hoping that the best is yet to come for her team.

“It was a very difficult start,” Gallo said.

But after the Titans dropped that opening match at Prout, 7-0, they won four of their next five matches to improve to 4-2.

Now, Toll Gate will look to carry that momentum as the season progresses.

Its next match is today against Ponaganset at 3:30 p.m. at Winman.
