Titans suffer first loss

The Toll Gate wrestling team had been perfect on the year, but it knew it would be in for a challenge when it took on Exeter-West Greenwich on Wednesday.

Sure enough, the Scarlet Knights sent the Titans to their first defeat of the year, 59-24. One of the top contenders for the state championship, EWG registered eight pins on its way to the victory. Toll Gate got pins from Max Procopio, Aaron Travers and Edmund Pierce, and Zach Caldarone won by tech fall, but it wasn’t enough to get past the Scarlet Knights

Toll Gate fell to 8-1 in Division II-North while EWG improved to 9-0 in II-Central. Barrington is the only other unbeaten team in D-II at 11-0. The Titans don’t take on the Eagles until their final meet of the season, but Toll Gate will take on Central Falls and Ponaganset at home today at 4:30 p.m.

’Canes avenge defeat

On Jan. 17, the Warwick Vets girls’ basketball team lost to Classical 41-30 after scoring just six points in the first half.

Last Monday, the ’Canes got revenge.

Behind 17 points from Casey Bennett, Vets knocked off the Purple 46-39. Emily Almonte had 12 rebounds and five points and Kat Raposo had 10 points. Lauren Almonte had six points.

The win was Vets’ third of the season and it halted a three-game losing streak.

The ’Canes lost their next two games after that to Lincoln and St. Raphael to fall to 3-6 in Division II-Central, just behind Classical.

Vets has some winnable games coming up, as it is scheduled to take on two-win Mount St. Charles today on the road at 7 p.m. and then go to three-win North Providence for a game on Friday, also at 7.
