Titans surging to the finish line

The Toll Gate boys’ tennis team got off to a rocky start this year, but the Titans are closing the season with a flurry.

Toll Gate defeated Portsmouth 6-1 on Thursday for its fifth win its last eight matches. The Titans started the season out 0-3 but are now 5-6, good for the seventh-best record in Division II.

They were scheduled to close out the regular season on Friday at Woonsocket, but that match had to be postponed due to court conditions. It will be made up today at 3:30 p.m., with the Titans trying to end the season with a .500 record. If they reach that mark, it will be the first time they haven’t finished below .500 since the 2008 season.

Against Portsmouth, Brandyn Garrahy lost at No. 1 singles to Luke Lewis, but Dan Smith, Nick Mattioli and Jeremy Cullen swept the next three singles matches, with Cullen improving to 11-0 on the season thanks to his 6-0, 6-0 win.

On the doubles courts, the No. 1 team of Duncan Hart and Hunter Hebert won, the No. 2 team of Kyle Gray and John Yavas followed suit and the No. 3 team of Ryan Donnelly and Collin Gleavey finished off the doubles sweep. (Warwick Beacon photos by Kevin Pomeroy)
