On the heels of four consecutive losses after a 5-1 start to the year, the Toll Gate softball team was in desperate need of something big to change their fortunes.
They got it on Monday.
Facing La Salle, the Titans’ Jessica Brosnahan hit a walk-off two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning, sending Toll Gate home with a dramatic — and important — 3-1 victory.
The inning started with a single from Pattie Truner, and Brosnahan, the No. 4 hitter, ended the game on a 3-2 pitch from La Salle pitcher Meghan Lavey.
Toll Gate got seven strong innings on the mound from Katie McCaughey, as she struck out six batters and allowed just the one run on three hits.
The Titans had a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning after Molly Turner came around on a hit by Jenna Beauchamp. La Salle tied it in the top of the seventh before the Titans walked off with the win.
Turner reached base three times, Brosnahan had two hits — including the home run — and McCaughey, Courtney Conklin and Beauchamp all added hits.
Toll Gate is now 6-5 in Division I-South, which is tied for the eighth-best mark in D-I. They have seven games remaining, and will look to build on Monday’s win. Their next game is Thursday at Cumberland at 4 p.m., followed by a game at home against Mount St. Charles on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
