Titans win battle of unbeatens

The Toll Gate girls’ tennis team got its toughest test of the season on Thursday.

The Titans passed with flying colors.

Hosting Westerly in a battle of unbeaten teams, the Titans won three of four singles matches and two doubles matches on their way to a 5-2 victory. Toll Gate is now 7-0 and sitting atop the Division II-Suburban B standings.

Arianna Rizzo, Mackenzie Kelly and Schuyler Teneyck delivered the singles victories, all in straight sets. The doubles court was more level, but the Titans found a way.

At No. 1 doubles, Jen Schaad and Jackie Falso defeated Emily Palma and Renee Cordio 6-2 in the first set before dropping the next set by the same score. In the decisive third set, the Titans’ duo came back strong for a 6-0 victory. At No. 2 doubles, Laurel Teneyck and Anna-Rose Pearson found themselves in a battle with Maro Douglas and Kate Kuzmic. After winning the first set 6-4, the Toll Gate tandem lost the second set 7-6 but won a marathon a third set to clinch the victory.

With the quick season now almost halfway over, the Titans are in prime position to win the regular-season division title, although they’ll have some competition. Narragansett is also unbeaten, and the Titans and Mariners won’t meet until the season finale on Oct. 10 at Narragansett High School.

Toll Gate, Narragansett and Westerly have been the class of Division II thus far. In the other sub-division – Suburban A – Ponaganset’s 4-2 record is the best.

The Titans have five matches remaining, beginning with a road tilt with East Providence on Thursday.

Warwick squads near the top in D-II soccer

Warwick Vets suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday but remains part of the head of the pack in Division II girls’ soccer. Pilgrim is also there with a 3-0-1 mark.

Vets saw its unbeaten streak end with a close, 3-2 loss to fellow unbeaten Scituate. The Spartans broke a 2-2 tie with just five minutes left. Casey Bennett and Emily Almonte had the goals for the ’Canes.

Pilgrim stayed undefeated Thursday with a 3-0 victory over Mount St. Charles. Clare Birney, Haley McCusker and Katelyn Vieira scored, with assists from Molly Lynch, Sophia DeLuca and Hannah Johnson. Hannah Page made 13 saves.
