For the first time this season, the Toll Gate softball team is on a winning streak.
The Titans won their second game in a row on Thursday, knocking off Woonsocket 10-0. After a slow start to the year, Toll Gate appears to be righting the ship, as that win – coupled with a 1-0 victory over Westerly in eight innings on Wednesday – improved its record to 3-7.
The Titans had lost five games in a row before the consecutive victories.
Against Westerly, Courtney Marsh pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out five while allowing six hits. Karley Mallette’s walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth provided the only run, as Laura Salisbury came in to score.
The next day, Toll Gate didn’t wait nearly as long to get on the board. It scored five runs in the second inning on its way to a five-inning, mercy-rule victory.
Mallette went 4-for-4 at the plate, while Jenna Beauchamp provided a huge boost with a second-inning grand slam, and Jamie Hopgood added a three-run home run. Marsh pitched the first four innings, with Courtney Iadevaia closing out the game in the fifth.
Toll Gate was scheduled to play at La Salle on Monday and then host rival Warwick Vets Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. The Titans are currently in 13th place in Division I.
’Canes win a pair as well
The Vets softball team came into last week with one win as well, but it doubled that total by going 2-1 in three games.
It beat Woonsocket 16-2 on Tuesday, lost to East Providence on Thursday and then bounced back to knock off Barrington 6-1 on Friday. The ’Canes are 3-9, in 14th place in D-I.
Kayla Morin and Arietta Chevian combined for the win on the mound against Woonsocket, and they also did a lot of the damage at the plate. Chevian had four hits, while Morin had three.
Three days later against Barrington, Morin pitched a complete-game to pick up the victory, and Vets jumped on top with four runs in the first inning. Michelle Spremulli hit a home run, and Emily Walason and Kelsey Houle each singled in runs.
Vets also dropped a non-league game 12-11 to Cranston East on Saturday.
