Too much St. Patty’s ... call the cops

Okay, so you love St. Patrick’s Day and you’ve celebrated a little too much. And you’re not sure whether you should get behind the wheel of your car.

So what should you do? Call the cops.

Seriously, that’s just what Sgt. John Kelly is suggesting.

Kelly has lined up 20 volunteers, all alumni of the Warwick Citizens Police Academy, to provide rides for St. Patrick’s Day celebrants from noon until midnight. The rides are free and are limited to Warwick.

And don’t worry, Kelly assures, you won’t get picked up in a marked car. Unmarked police cars are being used for this first-time service.

In anticipation of the celebrating and a little too much drinking, Kelly said three details would be specifically assigned to stopping drunk drivers.

Knowing that there is a ride, Kelly suggested people get dropped off at their preferred lounge and then call for a ride home. The number to call is the Warwick Police Department at 468-4200.

To get the word out, Kelly said he has been distributing flyers to establishments throughout the city. He said he’s gotten a positive reception.

“We want to curb the drunk driving, but we don’t want to hurt the businesses,” he said.

Kelly said two volunteers would staff each vehicle.
