With a force of 214, the Warwick Fire Department has been first in the Fill the Boot campaign for MDA in Southern New England and looks to be so again this year. As of Sunday – the second weekend firefighters have been collecting – motorists had donated $33,000 in bills. Pvt. Matt Maraia, who has worked the drive for the last five years, said there are still another 15 bags in change to be counted. He expects that by the time the drive was completed yesterday that donations will approach $40,000. Carl Pecchia, who was stationed near Governor Francis Shopping Center, said Warwick collections are consistently high because, “we have enough guys and enough generous people out there.” He also thanked the department’s command for a schedule that enables firefighters to make the collections. Firefighters pass the boot while on duty. Many also volunteer to make the collections. From left: Steven St.Pierre, Chris Librizzi and Pecchia. (Warwick Beacon photo)
