Touro Fraternal Association announces scholarships

The Touro Fraternal Association recently announced 14 Rhode Island students were awarded financial aid, including one Warwick resident and two Cranston residents.

This year, a total of $45,000 in financial aid was awarded by the organization, which is the largest independent Jewish fraternal order in New England, headquartered in Cranston.

The 2013 grant recipients are Deena E. Guttin, Jordan B. Harpel and Bennett G. Schiff. Each student received a scholarship grant from the Association’s Leo Greenberg Memorial Scholarship fund, valued at $3,000.

Deena, who is from Cranston, is the daughter of William M. Guttin. She is currently a senior at Johnson & Wales University, studying Hotel and Lodging Management.

Jordan is the son of Jeffrey M. Harpel, and is from Warwick. He also attends Johnson & Wales, studying Network Engineering.

Bennett, also from Cranston, is the son of Barry and Pam Schiff; Pam is a writer from the Cranston Herald. Schiff just began his freshman year at Drexel University, and is majoring in Sports Management.

The remaining $33,000 of financial aid was split among the 11 other winners in the form of interest-free loans. All 14 recipients are association members.

“Since the fund was established in 1981, approximately a half million dollars has been distributed to students,” said Steven Waldman, chairman of Touro’s Student Financial Aid Committee. “All loans are interest-free and are not repayable until six months after the student graduates or ceases to be a full-time student. To date, no loans have been defaulted.”

The committee reviewed a total of 10 grant applications and 13 loan applications. Any regular Touro member, spouses, children or children of deceased members enrolled as full-time students for the 2013-2014 school year were eligible for grants or interest-free loans.
