Tony Award-winning Trinity Repertory Company, under the leadership of Richard L. Bready Artistic Director Curt Columbus kicks off their 2015-2016 season, Rebels, Renegades and Pioneers with William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, directed by Associate Artistic Director Tyler Dobrowsky. Julius Caesar runs September 10- October 11, 2015 in Trinity Rep’s Dowling Theater. Tickets are available at www.trinityrep.com, by calling 351-4242 or at the theater’s box office at 201 Washington St., Providence.

From 44 BC to 2015 AD, the same story has played out thousands of times: an ambitious politician is brought down by a league of jealous conspirators. Driven and confident, Caesar (played in this production by resident company member Anne Scurria) has just returned from war a hero, only to find a group of close advisors want her dead. In a prescient exploration of the underbelly of political maneuvering, Julius Caesar is an explosion of jealousy, retribution, power and control.

“I feel drawn to Julius Caesar as the nation faces the onset of what promises to be a charged presidential election season,” remarked Dobrowsky. “Anne Scurria is a ferocious actress, and her performance raises questions and frames this seemingly well-known story in a whole new light. In our increasingly venomous political climate, Julius Caesar feels extraordinarily timely.”

Joining Scurria are Trinity Rep resident company members Mauro Hantman, Brian McEleney, Barbara Meek, Fred Sullivan, Jr., Stephen Thorne, Rachael Warren, and Joe Wilson, Jr. with Richard Donelly and Tara Sullivan and Brown/Trinity Rep actors Joshua Lomeli, Olivia Khoshatefeh, Timothy Kopacz, George Olesky and Griffin Sharps. The production also features live music performed by members of Providence’s Community Music Works. Members of this ensemble were recently seen in Trinity Rep’s 2015 production of Melancholy Play: a chamber musical.

The creative team includes John Ambrosone (lighting design), Olivera Gajic (costume design), Craig Handel (fight choreography), Peter Hurowitz (sound design) and Michael McGarty (set design), with stage manager Megan Tracy Leddy.

Director Tyler Dobrowsky currently serves as the theater’s associate artistic director and has worked in Trinity Rep’s education and artistic departments since 2003. Directing credits at Trinity Rep include A Flea in Her Ear, It’s A Wonderful Life, Love Alone (with Deb Salem Smith) and A Christmas Carol, as well as The Big Meal and Morality Play at the Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre, and A Brief History of the Earth… at Elemental Theater. As Trinity Rep’s education director, he was instrumental in the expansion of the theater’s after-school and summer programs. Tyler teaches for the Brown/Trinity Rep MFA program as well as Trinity Rep’s educational programs for children and adults. He received his MA from Brown University and BA from Holy Cross.

Continuing Trinity Rep’s tradition of offering affordable tickets for all, the theater will have discounted previews of Julius Caesar from September 10-13. Sept. 11 is a Pay What You Can performance. Tickets go on sale at 6:30 p.m. that evening, and are limited to one per person.

Julius Caesar is sponsored by The Gould Charitable Lead Unitrust, with additional support from Shakespeare in American Communities, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts and Arts Midwest.
