Trio of former Hawks helping lead charge for Assumption

A trio of Hendricken alums have seen significant playing time for the Assumption nine this spring, helping the Greyhounds out on the diamond in their own ways.

Chief among the former Hawks is Travis Smith, who leads the team with seven stolen bases. In addition to his penchant for thievery, Smith’s 17 doubles and 24 runs driven in pace the Greyhounds, while his .308 batting average is good enough for second on Assumption’s hitting charts.

Smith’s exploits at the plate earned him recognition from the Northeast-10 Conference as he earned player of the week honors for the week ending April 14 after a five-game stretch that saw him increase his batting average by 44 points and score six runs.

Joe Lopes has spent much of the season as the starting catcher, before recently giving way to an underclassman. Before the change behind the plate, Lopes was having a solid season at the plate, batting at a .300 clip while driving home 13 baserunners.

A third ex-Hawk, Matt Metcalf, has made 16 appearances out of the bullpen, chalking up eight strikeouts in 22.1 innings of work and picking up the win in the Hounds’ April 16 triumph over American International.

Despite the contributions of the green-and-gold brigade, Assumption is on pace to finish the regular season below the .500 mark for the third season in a row. The Greyhounds next take the field on Wednesday in a day-night doubleheader against St. Rose before a three game set versus New Haven this weekend.

Henry, Giarratano play well for Anna Maria lacrosse

The men’s lacrosse team at Anna Maria is looking forward to the future thanks in no small part to a pair of freshman contributors who went to high school in Warwick not too long ago.

Hendricken alum Scott Henry was the attacking leader for the Amcats in 2013, pacing the team with 33 goals, while his 16 assists were good for a tie atop the leaderboard.

A full third of his markers came in a two-game stretch in early April that saw Henry put six past Daniel Webster before adding a further five against Mount St. Vincent, being named Great Northeast Athletic Conference rookie of the week in the process.

Meanwhile, Joshua Giarratano spent the majority of the season starting between the pipes, sharing duties with another freshman.

In 12 games, the Toll Gate product made 151 saves while posting a 10.83 goals against average.

Like Henry, Giarratano was honored by the GNAC for fine play during the season; he was tabbed the conference’s goaltender of the week in early March on the back of an eight save performance against Husson that stood up for his first intercollegiate win.

The season came to an end for Anna Maria on Tuesday with a 19-6 defeat to top-seeded Norwich in the quarterfinals of the GNAC tournament. Henry scored a pair of goals in the losing effort for the Amcats, who finished the campaign with a 6-10 record.
