Turkey Trotters wanted for Thanksgiving Day 5K

Posted

Before preparations begin for Thanksgiving Day turkey, watching football or entering the fray of Black Friday shopping, members of the Warwick Rotary Club and Warwick’s High Schools hope the community will join them for their first Thanksgiving 5K Turkey Trot.

“I think this is a great way to start Thanksgiving Day,” says Tom Sanford, member of the Warwick Rotary and organizer of the event. “I thought that this might be a good way to tie in the schools with Rotary and try to keep a steady stream of funding for them.”

The first Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, which will take place at Warwick City Park’s walking trail, will be held on Thursday, November 27 at 8 am. The early morning trot, timed to allow participants the opportunity to attend high school football games and other events, is open to all families, clubs and organizations in the community.

“We’re hoping that this becomes a community activity,” said Tom. “Hopefully, we can build this from year to year into something people look forward to doing.”

Half of the funds raised from the Turkey Trot will benefit the Warwick Rotary Charity Fund with the other half benefiting all Warwick public high schools. Food donations will go to the Westbay Community Action Program’s Food Pantry.

“Some of the money will also go to scholarships for high school seniors, as well as the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center, the Rhode Island Shelter and the House of Hope,” said Tom.

Hoping to create a sense of competition, contributions to all three of Warwick’s high schools will be based on participant attendance from those schools.

“The high school that has the largest number of people attending the Turkey Trot will get 50 percent of that money, the second place school will get 30 percent and third place school will get 20 percent,” said Tom. “These funds will then be used for charitable purposes by the schools, such as charity baskets during the holidays or clothing drives.

Registration fees for adults are $10 plus a contribution of one non-perishable food item. Students between the ages of 6-18 may register for $5, plus one non-perishable food item. Children under the age of 6 are admitted for free provided they bring one non-perishable item.

Pre-registration forms are available online at www.clubrunner.ca/
