Music by John Phillips Sousa and Franz Schubert won’t be on the same concert program at the University of Rhode Island, but they will be performed on the same weekend, in two concerts presented by the URI Music Department October 18-19. Both concerts will be held in the URI Fine Arts Center Concert Hall, 105 Upper College Road, Kingston, at 8 p.m.

The URI Concert Band, directed by Brian Cardany, leads off with their fall concert Friday evening, offering not only music by Sousa (Fairest of the Fair) but also by Bach (Fantasia in G Major by J. S. Bach/Goldman-Leist), John Barnes Chance (Variations on a Korean Folk Song), and works by T. Broege (Three Pieces for American Band, Set No. 2), H. Stuart, and A. Boysen. Tickets for this concert are $12 general admission and $7 students, available via check or cash at the box office starting 45 minutes before the concert, or via credit card though the Music Department website at www.uri.edu/music.

Faculty, alumni and selected students from URI’s vocal and piano programs will perform “Franz & Francis! A Celebration of the Music of Franz Schubert and Francis Poulenc” on Saturday evening. The concert, offered with free admission as part of the Family Weekend programming at URI, will include a number of German lieder (art songs) by Schubert and French mélodies by Poulenc, sung by vocalists from the studios of Margaret Frazier, Rene de la Garza, and Mark Conley. Poulenc’s 1945 setting of the beloved children’s classic The Story of Babar will be performed by Manabu Taksawa and selected pianists from his studio, each taking a portion of the music while Margaret Frazier narrates. Images from the familiar children’s book will be shown in slides with the music.

The piano portion of the concert will also include Sonata for Two Pianos by Poulenc, performed by students of Grace Urrico. URI’s collaborative pianists Melissa Woolverton and Laura Hibbard will perform, as well as recent URI alumni Tony Malerich and Jonathan Audette. The concert marks the 185th and 50th anniversary of the deaths of the two famous composers, and is coordinated by Frazier and Takasawa.

The URI Concert Hall is handicap-accessible and parking is available in the lot behind the Fine Arts Center, off Bills Road. For more information, contact the URI Department of Music, 874-5955, or check the website www.uri.edu/music.
