'Unbroken' the book offers so much more

I couldn’t understand the lukewarm reviews and the criticisms of the direction of “Unbroken.” Then I read the book by Laura Hillenbrand.

Rarely would I even think of reading a book after seeing the movie, but John Howell handed it to me and told me to read it. I would never argue with my editor.

I now understand the criticism.

The movie concentrates heavily on Louis Zamperini’s experiences, surviving nearly a month in a raft and being brutally tortured at Japanese POW camps, missing his “back story” and, more importantly, the effects that his arduous survival had on the rest of his life.

There are also numerous incidents of survival that take place during his capture that are at times humorous and at times gut-wrenching.

There is so much more about the life of Zamperini, brilliantly and emotionally told in Hillenbrand’s best-selling book.

I recommend it to you.
