Unveiling of the names on the Wall of Honor

The Jewish War Veterans of Rhode Island held the 68th annual memorial services at the Memorial Wall of Honor at Lincoln Park Cemetery under a large tent that jostled in the wind but held its ground Sunday morning.

Sanford H. Gorodetsky, deputy commander, chaired the ceremony that included remarks by Warwick Police Chief Col. Stephen McCartney, Mayor Scott Avedisian, Dan Evangelista, chief of the RI Office of Veterans Affairs, and Major General Kevin McBride, Rhode Island adjutant general. Kim Ripoli, associate director of veterans affairs, for the state was the keynote speaker.

A highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of the names of those who died in the last year on the Memorial Wall of Honor and the laying of a wreath at the wall, which was followed by a rifle salute and the playing of taps.

Several speakers pointed out the windy and chilly conditions, remarking how they were in contrast to the frequently hot weather at this time of year.

“It’s truly important to put aside our discomforts and remember theirs,” McBride said of family of slain veterans. He talked of losing comrades in battle, adding, “it is more difficult for loved ones back home who will never lose that pain.” He said we all have a moral responsibility to remember those who made those ultimate sacrifices.
