Unwanted yellow jackets found inside Wickes School all-purpose room

John Wickes School had a few unwanted visitors last week that all the security measures installed in recent years could have never stopped.

School Principal Roy Costa said yesterday that yellow jackets were found in the all-purpose room. He suspects they entered the building though “weep holes” designed to allow moisture to escape from the concrete block walls. He said the department’s maintenance division responded and that an exterminator was at the school twice. Another visit was set for yesterday afternoon after school.

He said extermination efforts were timed when the school is not in use.

According to one caller to the Beacon, a student was stung last week.

Costa said he was aware of only one student being stung and that he did not learn of it until called by the student’s parents.

Superintendent Richard D’Agostino said that proper measures, including the roping off of the area where the yellow jackets had been seen, had been taken.
