VISA credit cards accepted at DMV

Customers may now use a VISA credit card when transacting business at the RI Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Governor Lincoln Chafee calls the move another step designed to streamline the DMV experience.

“We’re continuing to make improvements at DMV,” Governor Chafee said in a statement. “By adding VISA, customers have another way to make a convenient payment without worrying about bringing cash or writing a check to cover their DMV transaction.”

DMV began accepting MasterCard, Discover and American Express credit cards last April and DMV Administrator Anthony Silva is pleased that an agreement has now been reached with VISA credit to give customers an additional payment option.

There is a minimum service fee of $1.50 per transaction. A service fee of 2.35 percent will be applied for each transaction $64 and more. The state of Rhode Island does not keep any portion of this fee. It goes to DMV’s third party provider, Federal Payments. No debit cards are accepted at DMV.

Visa is accepted at numerous government offices around the country and is a convenient, reliable and secure way for consumers to make their payments. In addition, government offices receive numerous benefits by accepting Visa, including guaranteed payment, increased security and greater efficiencies and transparency compared to cash and check payments.
