The Volunteers of Warwick Schools (VOWS) in partnership with the Warwick Coalition to Prevent Child Abuse is hosting a free information night for the parents of students of all ages in the Warwick school system on Thursday, March 26.

The event, held at the Buttonwoods Community Center, is called Parent University 101: Steps to Success.

A resource fair will be running with various local service providers, including but not limited to the Rhode Island Parent Information Network, Westbay Community Action, the Westbay Child Center and Warwick Parents as Teachers.

The focus of the session is to help parents ensure their children’s success. Sara Monaco, Ed.D., from Warwick Public Schools’ Title 1 Family Center, will make a half-hour presentation about the connection between mental health and students’ success as well as the parent-school relationship.

Claire Flaherty, executive director of VOWS, said, “It is important that parents know they need to have communication with the schools and know what that relationship should be.” She said that the relationship between parents and the school their children attend can change at different grade levels and the event has information for all ages.

Monaco will make her presentation at 6, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.

“We want to get families off on the right foot and stay on the right foot by showing that between parents it is not a push-pull relationship, but a cooperative one,” Flaherty said.

The event is free to the public with students in the school system. It will be held on Thursday, March 26 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Buttonwoods Community Center, 3027 West Shore Road.
