Valentine’s Bake Sale to support fight against cancer

Whenever there’s a holiday, Johnston businesswoman Lori Boffi incorporates it with a special theme and holds a special fundraising event to help battle cancer at her Card$mart store, located in the Town Hall Plaza at 1507 Atwood Ave.

“It’s something I’ve been part of since 1977,” Boffi said. “It was a terrible year; my grandfather passed away after battling cancer. It was absolutely awful, and I was deeply saddened by our family’s loss.”

At that time, her mother, Ann Storti, was working at the Rhode Island State Police headquarters in Scituate when a group of her friends joined a cancer fundraising group. Boffi has been involved in fundraising ever since.

Boffi has been involved in countless fundraisers coordinated with help from family members and many, many friends, including her longtime friend Kim Pinelli, who just so happens to be a staffer at Card$mart.

This weekend, Boffi will hold another event – her annual Valentine’s Bake Sale – with all proceeds going to a designated non-profit to support the ongoing battle against cancer under the name of her all-volunteer team, “One Step at a Time.”

Boffi said her mother and sister, Deb Sohegan, “will be right by my side baking all kinds of goodies like heart-shaped cakes, Valentine’s accented cupcakes, cookies, brownies, and a variety of other sweet things.”

Boffi’s efforts have resulted in sizeable donations to cancer-related organizations like Hasbro Children’s Hospital, Relay For Life, Camp Fires for Cancer, the American Cancer Society, and Brown University Oncology Research.

In addition to the Valentine’s Bake Sale – that will be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13, from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. – Card$mart will have a variety of Valentine’s specialty items like plush stuffed animals and Kiss-A-Grams.
