The Warwick Veterans Memorial High School Class of 1974 Reunion was one for the ages with the ever-constant chant: “We were, and still are, the mighty, mighty Hurricanes!”

Upwards of 80 people danced under blue, white and yellow lanterns, and even blue and white twinkle lights, that the planning committee decorated the East Greenwich Firemen’s Club with last Friday night on June 7, the exact day the class graduated in 1974.

“What a night,” Deb Anderson Petisce, the event’s chairperson, exclaimed as people hugged, smiled and even shed some tears while embracing classmates they hadn’t seen in years. “Everyone said our wonderful memories remain alive and well.”

However, the Class of ’74 vowed to never let the 32 classmates who have passed be forgotten. They were honored during a special toast.

“Everyone agreed that what was unfolding was a night of good food, great friends getting back together to reminisce those glorious days at Vets High,” Petisce said. “The photo booth featured child-like laughter and gave way to the love classmates had for one another as friends.”

As the band Whiskey Rhode played songs from the ’70s, classmates and their guests enjoyed penny candy from the ’60s and ’70s and participated in a raffle that was determined by what person had a 1974 penny taped to their chair.

They also won a Rhode Island Lottery ticket if there was a 1974 penny on their chair.

“Kind of ironic,” Petisce said, “the Lottery is also celebrating its 40th year!”
