Vets girls grab playoff berth

As the girls’ basketball season comes to a close, one Warwick team is not quite finished. Thanks to its win last Tuesday against Burrillville, Warwick Vets will be facing second-seed Rogers High School tonight at 7 p.m. in the preliminary round of the Division II playoffs. Vets is the No. 15 seed.

The ’Canes beat the Broncos 50-42. Casey Bennett and Lauren and Emily Almonte, who scored 37 combined points, led the way. Bennett scored 16 points, including two three-point shots and two free throws. Lauren Almonte made four field goals and three out of five free throw attempts. Emily Almonte closed out the trio with 10 points, all on shots from the field. Ricki Beaufort, Abbie Paul, Kat Raposo and Victoria Ferri also added buckets.

The win gives Vets its seventh win of the season, putting it in fourth in D-II-Central. The winner of its game versus Rogers will face the winner of North Providence-East Greenwich on Sunday at 6 p.m.

As the ’Canes prepare for the playoffs, other Warwick girls wrapped up their basketball seasons this past Thursday. Pilgrim suffered a 56-28 loss to Moses Brown in its final game. The team was led by Alexa Martins and Claire Birney, who scored six and five points respectively. Every member of the roster offered at least one point to the effort. Unfortunately, it was not enough to match the Moses Brown squad, headed by Ogechi Ezemma’s 13-point game.

At the same time Thursday night, Toll Gate faced its own troubles, losing their final game to Prout, 50-38. Laura McGuire scored 14 points, including two three-pointers, Hannah McNulty scored eight points and Sarah Sagnella contributed seven points, including one three-pointer. Jackie Falso, Brooke Casacalenda, and Holly Gerber-George also helped the cause, but the team could not fend off the Crusaders, who will be facing Lincoln in the first round of the playoffs this Wednesday.
