Vets girls top Tiverton for first win

Posted

The Warwick Vets girls’ soccer team knew it would have a shot at finally breaking into the win column soon with the way its schedule was unfolding.

Its first real chance came against East Providence on Oct. 8, but the ’Canes came away only with a 4-4 draw. Their second chance came this past Wednesday, and this time, they took full advantage.

Playing fellow winless Tiverton, Vets picked up its first victory, 5-2. The ’Canes then played Tiverton again on Friday and lost 6-3, giving the Tigers their first win of the year. Kat Raposo did have a hat trick in the defeat.

Vets will have another great shot at a victory on Wednesday when it hosts East Providence, which is still without a win. If the ’Canes can beat the Townies, they also may wind up in the postseason despite their current 1-11-2 mark.

Twelve teams qualify for the playoffs, and Vets is in 13th, one point behind 12th-place Tiverton. A win over East Providence would give the ’Canes eight points, and Tiverton would only have six. The Tigers still play East Providence, so they would reach nine points with a win.

Vets also has games against city rivals Pilgrim and Toll Gate scheduled for this week to close out the regular season.

Hawks stay unbeaten

Disappointed in the way it performed in a one-point victory over Cranston East two weeks ago, the top-ranked Bishop Hendricken football team got back on track this past Friday night.

Playing Cumberland, the Hawks got one of their best defensive efforts of the year in a 34-7 win. They gave up a 4-yard touchdown run to Tyler Calabro in the first quarter, but allowed no points the rest of the way.

Quarterback John Toppa kept up his impressive scoring pace, running for three scores – 6, 1 and 11 yards – and he also threw a 9-yard touchdown to senior receiver Lee Moses. Hendricken’s other touchdown came on a 24-yard fumble recovery by Shane Olson. Most of the Hawks’ damage came in a 20-point second quarter, which put them up 27-7 at halftime.

They’re now 5-0, with three league games remaining and a bye scheduled for this weekend. Their next game is Saturday, Nov. 1 against Cranston West at Cranston Stadium. The following week, they play unbeaten La Salle in a first-place showdown.
