The girls’ basketball season got underway in Warwick Thursday, with Warwick Vets topping Toll Gate 38-35 in an Injury Fund contest.

Vets led 21-14 at halftime, but Toll Gate battled back to tie the game at 35-35 in the final minute of play. But Casey Bennett, Vets’ top offensive weapon, hit an outside shot with just 49 seconds left to break a tie and put Vets in control. Toll Gate couldn’t score on its next possession and had to foul Bennett, who hit one free throw to provide the final margin.

Hannah McNulty was Toll Gate’s top performer, scoring 13 points and adding 13 rebounds, and she was one of three freshmen who started the game for the Titans.

Vets was right back in action on Monday, taking on Central on the road in a non-league game, with the results unavailable at press time. The ’Canes will host West Warwick on Wednesday for another non-league game, this one at 4 p.m.

The Titans have another rivalry game to play today, as they’re at Pilgrim at 7 p.m. for a non-league game.
