Vets runs to historic season

The Warwick Vets boys’ cross country team hadn’t won eight dual meets in a season since 1991, but last Monday the ’Canes finally reached that height again.

Vets defeated Hope 17-42 and Mt. Pleasant 17-44 at Warwick City Park to finish the year with an 8-4 mark in the Suburban Division. The ’Canes ended up in fifth place, and will have a shot at qualifying for the state meet via the class championships on Oct. 26.

At Monday’s meet, Vets senior Ian Anderson took first place in a time of 17:51 on the 3.1 mile course, while Chris Smith came in fifth in 18:20. Evan Anderson was the ’Canes’ third runner across the line in eighth place with a time of 19:05. Pilgrim also had a strong showing at the meet, as Sam Eleuterio and Brandon Lawton finished in third and fourth place, respectively. The Pats finished the regular season at 6-5-1.

Vets narrowly missed out on beating Coventry – which would have vaulted the team into fourth place – as it fell 26-33 to the Oakers.

For Vets, it is the second consecutive year that the team has finished above .500, as it went 7-5 last season. Prior to that, it had been since 2000 and 2001 when the ’Canes last had consecutive years above .500, and 2001 was the last time the team had a winning record before 2012.

Toll Gate had the best year of any public school in the city, going 10-2 with its only losses coming to unbeaten Bishop Hendricken and one loss East Greenwich.

The class championships will be held at Ponaganset high school, and the state meet is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 3, also at Ponaganset.
