Vets sweeps Pilgrim on courts

The Warwick Vets and Pilgrim girls’ tennis teams squared off Thursday at Vets, with the ’Canes taking care of business in a 7-0 victory.

Vets improved to 5-6 on the year in Division III-West and then beat Central 6-1 the next day to improve to 6-6. The Pats remained winless at 0-11. Vets is currently fifth in the division and is currently on the outside looking in as far as the playoff picture goes.

In singles, Lauren Smith defeated Kim Shum at No. 1, Corinne Gregoire beat Jazeon Johnson at No. 2, Alison Chace beat Mackenzie Barone at No. 3 and Kiah Marcotte defeated Kim Leavoie at No. 4.

In doubles, the team of Allison Carpenter and Jessica Ferreira beat Gabrielle Young and Makenzie Grover, Phone Htoo and Brianna Mather beat Gabby Savard and Shannon Johnson and Stephanie Racca and Hannah Ellis won at No. 3 doubles by forfeit.

Against Central, the ’Canes got wins from Smith, Gregoire, Chace and Marcotte, as well as the teams of Carpenter-Ferreira and Htoo-Mather.

Vets will have a tough stretch to finish the season. It hosts first-place Scituate on Wednesday, and then second-place Coventry on Thursday.

Pilgrim was at Exeter-West Greenwich on Monday, with results unavailable at press time. On Wednesday, it hosts East before closing out the year at home against Hope on Friday.

Toll Gate still rolling

The Toll Gate girls’ tennis team is dominating Division II.

The Titans are 10-0, the only unbeaten team in the division, and have lost just eight individual matches the entire year.

Most recently, they beat Classical 6-1 on Thursday to reach double-digit wins. Arianna Rizzo dropped her match at No. 1 singles, but Mackenzie Kelly, Sky Teneyck and Jen Schaad all won their matches, and the doubles teams of Jackie Falso-Laurel Teneyck, Abby Ellis-Anna-Rose Pearson and Addie Lamothe-Rosie Kaczmarek all captured victories.

Toll Gate is in first place at the moment, but hasn’t yet clinched the regular season division title. It is at Middletown on Tuesday, and then ends its regular season on Thursday at Narragansett at 3:30 p.m. The Mariners have only one loss, and if they were to beat Toll Gate it could set up a three-way tie for first, along with Westerly.
