Vivaldi’s: Pizza and much more

Some people think that restaurant reviewers eat at four-star restaurants every nightThe truth is that Joyce and I spend many a night ordering pizza, Chinese, Subway and Wendy’s (the healthy salads).

Living in Edgewood makes it convenient to take a short walk or drive to order just about anything we want. Vivaldi’s Pizza, at 1826 Broad St. in Cranston, is our favorite local pizza parlor. They are convenient, quick, reasonably priced, generous on the toppings, make the best sauce around, and their fresh dough is on the thin side.

In addition to the usual toppings, they offer a number of specialties, including the house special of pepperoni, sausage, meatballs, onions, peppers, mushrooms, bacon, olives and garlic. What more could a pizza lover want? (12 inch is $10.50; 16 inch is $16.50; 18 inch is $19.50.)

We love to order a large pizza and enjoy it for the next couple of days. A friend told us the best way to reheat the slices: Put them in a frying pan or grill on the stove. They will retain their crispness and not get soggy like they do in a microwave.

While we are fans of the healthier Subway sandwiches, we can’t resist Vivaldi’s sausage and meatball “grinders,” with their tasty sauce. Joyce likes the parmigiana; I prefer it without (8” $4.95/12” $5.95). For the same price, you can order their specialty, the Italian Combo, with ham, salami, provolone, lettuce tomato, onion, hot peppers, oil and vinegar.

For a relatively small neighborhood pizza parlor, Vivaldi’s has a huge menu. In addition to pizza and grinders, they offer calzones, stuffed breads, buffalo wings, salads, appetizers, rollups and gyros. A variety of Italian dinners feature that incredible sauce.

Last Friday Joyce had a craving for pizza (not an unusual occurrence). I wanted fish and chips. It was pouring out, and I didn’t feel like driving to my usual Warwick fish market, so I decided to try Vivaldi’s fish and chips. For $8.95 I enjoyed some of the best fish and chips I have ever had. A huge portion of perfectly cooked, greaseless fish and a generous order of crispy french fries and deli cole slaw more than satisfied both my appetite and palate. Who would have guessed?

Vivaldi’s is open 7 days a week from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. weekdays, midnight on Friday and Saturday and noon to 11 on Sunday. They deliver and cater. Their phone number is 461-7495.
