Volunteer judges sought for Academic Decathlon March 15

The Rhode Island Academic Decathlon is looking for volunteers to serve as judges for the speech and interview portions of the 33rd statewide competition Sunday, March 15 at the Knight Campus of CCRI  in Warwick.

Volunteers may choose to judge the competition’s morning session, afternoon or both. Judges work in panels of two to four and will evaluate high school students who’ve studied throughout the school year to compete.

Morning sessions, beginning at 8:30 a.m., involve evaluating prepared and impromptu speeches given by students. Afternoon sessions, starting at 12:15 p.m., involve conducting individual interviews of the students on a given topic. Volunteering is easy as training is provided, and all volunteers are invited for lunch.

Fifteen high schools are vying for the privilege of representing the state in the national competition to be held this year in Garden Grove, California. In addition to speech and interview sessions, school teams compete in eight other subject areas. The daylong competition concludes with the Super Quiz, which starts at 4:30 p.m. in the CCRI auditorium. An awards ceremony and the announcement of the winning team follows. The public is invited to attend the Super Quiz and the ceremony.

Those interested in serving as judges should register at www.riadregistration.org/decathlon/volunteers.pl. For additional information or to learn more about volunteering contact Tim Forsberg at timf@rhodybeat.com or at 732-3100.
