Voter registration deadline for Nov. 4 election is Oct. 5

Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis is reminding Rhode Islanders that Sunday, Oct. 5 is the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 4 general election.

“I want to remind voters to check their voter registration status at www.sos.ri.gov/vic to make sure their voter registration status is active, or register to vote if they haven’t done so already, so they may make their voices heard during this year’s general election,” Mollis said.

State law requires Rhode Islanders to register to vote at least 30 days before the general election. In order to register, you must be at least 18 years old by Nov. 4, 2014, a resident of Rhode Island and a U.S. citizen.

Although the Oct. 5 deadline falls on a Sunday, Mollis will open his office at 148 West River St. in Providence from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. to register voters. Local cities and towns throughout Rhode Island will also make arrangements for residents to register before the deadline. To find out where to register in your local city/town on Oct. 5, 2014, visit www.sos.ri.gov/elections/resources/lastdaytoregister for a complete list of cities/towns, times and locations.

“We are working with every local city and town to ensure that everyone who is interested in registering to vote has pertinent information about where to register and what to bring in order to register before the deadline,” Mollis said.

Rhode Islanders can also download voter registration forms from the Secretary of State’s website, www.sos.ri.gov/elections/voters. In order to make the deadline, their local Board of Canvassers must receive applicants’ original, signed form postmarked by Oct. 5.

In addition to targeting first-time voters, the special Sunday schedule gives voters who have moved or changed their names recently a convenient way to update their voter records as required by state law.

This year’s general election will include races for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and statewide general offices, as well as General Assembly and municipal seats.

Also, to learn your voter status, Mollis’ office has launched a mobile application designed to assist Rhode Island voters from mobile devices such as cell phones and tablets. RI VIC is the name of the mobile application. This app is free and available for online download for Apple devices at the Apple store and for Android devices at Google Play.

The RI VIC application is incredibly user-friendly and is perfect for anyone looking to learn their voter status, find out where to vote, research district information, get GPS directions from your current location to your polling place and more. Simply download the RI VIC app to your mobile device. Tap the icon, which reads RI VIC, and this launches the app on your device. Here, you have the option to conduct a “personal search” or a “general search.” After you make your selection, simple type in the required information and hit search.

A video demonstration of RI VIC can be found on YouTube. To locate RI VIC visit www.sos.ri.gov/mobileapp.

For more information about registering to vote visit sos.ri.gov or call 222-2340.
