WJHA skills competition postponed due to weather

Yet another seasonal snowstorm forced cancellation of many events last weekend, including Sunday’s scheduled Rhode Island Reds Heritage Society Skills Competition.

However, what’s being called a “landmark demonstration” by Reds Society President Buster Clegg, will take place – weather permitting – this Sunday, Feb. 22 at the Downtown Providence Alex & Ani Outdoor Ice Skating Rink.

As previously announced, the event will run from 8 to 10 a.m. and include 34 players from the Warwick Junior Hockey Association. Admission is free and is a team competition event designed to test the hockey skills of bantam and pee wee players from the highly-regarded WJHA.

The event has been established through a unique partnership between the 700-member plus Rhode Island Reds Heritage Society and the 600-player plus WJHA, which is regarded as the largest youth hockey program in the state.

The format for Sunday’s event, which was originally scheduled to run three hours, but has been modified to two hours, has been adapted from the Skills Competition held in conjunction with the American Hockey League’s 2007 All-Star Game.

Former Reds greats Bobby Leduc and Serge Boudreault will serve as on-ice coaches and head their respective teams that will be known as Team Leduc and Team Boudreault. Each squad will have 15 skaters and two goalies and will be made up of a mix of bantam and pee wee skaters and will have one bantam goalie and one pee wee goalie.

Clegg and WJHA president Chris Orton said that the two teams will compete in nine skill-based events and points will be awarded for each event. The team with the most points at the conclusion of the competition will be deemed the Champions of the Skills Challenge.

Among the events will be a Puck Control Relay, Goalie Relay, Rapid Fire Shooting, Fastest Skater, Fastest Goalie, Shooting Accuracy, Goalie Open Net Shooting, Pass and Score and Shootout.

Although parking is always a problem in Downtown Providence, traffic Sunday morning will not be as congested as it is not during the work week. There are various parking garages located within walking distance of the Alex & Ani Outdoor Ice Skating Rink, but it has been suggested that the Biltmore Hotel Parking Garage on Washington Street is the closest and perhaps the most convenient location near the rink. Rates vary from place-to-place.
