Wait delivers perfect conditions for National Night Out

The storm of Aug. 4 left more than 120,000 Rhode Islanders powerless and brought down trees on houses and cars, but it could not kill the spirit of Warwick’s National Night Out.

The event focusing on community and aimed at strengthening relationships between the community and police was scheduled for Aug. 4 at the Oakland Beach seawall. With so many of Warwick’s police deployed to assist with storm-related issues and most of the city in the dark, the event was cancelled. But organizers and in particular Ward 6 Councilwoman and City Council President Donna Travis wasn’t going to let a storm kill a favorite community event.

The city’s 32nd National Night Out was held Wednesday and the turnout, as usually the case, was impressive. In addition to police, participating agencies included Warwick Firefighters and the Rhode Island Airport Corporation. The Warwick Lions Club cooked up and served hotdogs while other organizations, including the Shriners and the Eastern Medicine Singers, provided entertainment and presentations. And, of course, a DJ kept the tunes coming.

Without a hint of what Mother Nature delivered on Aug. 4, the evening was blessed with a cool Greenwich Bay breeze and clear skies.
