Last autumn I attended the RI House Finance Committee hearings on the so-called "pension reform." I took the opportunity to blast the committee and the General Assembly at large on its "unconscionable act to deny the $24 million request to assist the developmentally disabled people in our state."
Indeed $75 million to 38 Studios, but not a dime for God's special children out of an $8 billion budget for a state with 1 million people. I had the good fortune in my life to succeed to the vacant state representative seat created by the death of late great Dr. Paul Sherlock on Jan. 17, 2004.
Paul and I shared much of the same passion of concern for this underserved group of individuals that deserve our help, our compassion and our constant attention. Paul was intimately involved and a great benefactor of the Trudeau Center right here in Warwick for many years. The work he did in this area does not need my adulation at all; it speaks loudly for itself. The loss was brought back to me in a poignant way last Thursday when I attended a forum at the Cowesett Apartments Clubhouse held on behalf of our special friends. Wake up Rhode Island! Get in involved in our state government. Evil triumphs when good men do nothing.
