Walaska urges residents to help city win grant

Sen. William A. Walaska (D-Dist. 30, Warwick) is urging Warwick residents to take on the National Grid’s “energy challenge” – a program to provide online energy-saving tips for utility customers and an opportunity for the city to win a $7,500 grant.

The educational initiative, sponsored by National Grid and SmartPower, calls on city residents and local businesses to sign up by the end of August to receive energy-saving tips online. If 5 percent of city residents and businesses sign up to participate by the end of the month, Warwick will receive a $7,500 grant to further its energy-saving efforts.

Warwick announced its participation in the program in March and hopes to join communities that have already met the challenge and won the grant, including Newport and North Smithfield.

To participate, individuals are asked to visit the website www.findyourfour.com, log in with their email address, identify their affiliation as the city of Warwick, and then click the button that says they’d like to learn four energy-saving ideas.

“Securing this grant would be a good thing and would help Warwick continue to achieve energy savings and efficiencies in municipal buildings,” said Walaska. “But the more important aspect of this program is helping city residents and businesses learn ways they can conserve energy and save on their utility bills. The program provides lots of simple tips to help residents achieve cost-savings in their own homes.”

SmartPower is a national nonprofit advocacy group dedicated to renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Walaska, who is serving his 10th term in the Senate, is vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce and vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Agriculture. He has been one of the prime movers in the development and expansion of the state’s distributed generation laws and programs that encourage the growth of renewable energy projects around the state.
