ACCIDENT INVOLVING SERIOUS INJURY

On May 27 at 7:30 p.m., the Warwick Police Department responded to a car and pedestrian accident in the area of 70 Centerville Road. The Traffic Division’s Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the accident. The accident involved one vehicle operated by a 32-year-old male from Warwick and a pedestrian, a 27-year-old male from West Greenwich. The pedestrian was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by Warwick Fire Rescue with serious injuries. The pedestrian’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The preliminary investigation disclosed that the vehicle was traveling east on Centerville Road in the left lane when the vehicle collided with the pedestrian who was crossing the roadway from the northbound side of Centerville Road toward the southbound side. The pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the crash. It does not appear that speed or alcohol/drugs were a factor in the accident.

The investigation is ongoing and any person with information related to the accident is requested to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division at 468-4293. Please contact either Sgt. John Kelly or Officer Matt Barlow, who is assigned as the lead investigator.

CONSTRUCTION SITE LARCENY

On May 23, Officer Brian Murray was dispatched to the construction site at 271 Toll Gate Road for the report of a larceny of material from that location.

Upon arrival, Murray met with the project superintendent at the site, who said around 6 a.m. they noticed 20 sheets of 5/8 gold edge plywood missing from the job site. They were last seen at the site the day before around 3 p.m.

Murray said there is no video surveillance at the location, but officers would keep a check of the area. No suspects. FRAUDULENT USE OF CREDIT CARD

On May 24, Detective James Medeiros met a male subject identified as Matthew Mayer, 20, of 25 Manson Avenue, Warwick, in the lobby of the Warwick Police Department. Medeiros had previously contacted Mayer and requested he come to the station after his name came up in an investigation, to which Mayer agreed and arrived on his own at noon.

Medeiros informed Mayer he was investigating a complaint of credit card fraud and said Mayer’s name came up as the person responsible. Mayer said he was drunk on the night in question, April 18, and did not remember much. He said he purchased some items at the Seasons Shell station on Elmwood Avenue with a card he got from a white male subject who was outside of the store. He said the unknown male wanted him to purchase cigarettes and he would give Mayer a pack.

While Mayer filled out a written statement, Medeiros left the room to review store video for the case, which showed the male suspect at the counter for some time. It appears he takes a card out of a bag he is holding and swipes it several times. Medeiros said it was noted that three transactions were logged on the victim’s account.

Upon re-interviewing Mayer and asking how he came into possession of the credit card, which had been stolen from a car in the general area of the Shell station, Mayer continued to deny any involvement with the larceny of the credit card from the vehicle and maintained he got it from a homeless white male outside the Shell station.

Mayer was processed and charged with one count of fraudulent use of a credit card.

RECKLESS DRIVING, NO LICENSE & MARIJUANA

On May 23 at 9:21 p.m., Officer Nicholas DiNardo was stopped at the traffic light facing southbound on Oakland Beach Avenue at West Shore Road behind two motorcycles. DiNardo said one of the registrations did not match the motorcycle and came back as expired and inactive. He also noticed the rear tire of the motorcycle was partially shredded. DiNardo said he initiated a vehicle stop in the area of Oakland Beach Ave. and Limestone Road.

DiNardo exited his vehicle and approached the operator, at which time he noticed a juvenile female, approximately 12 or 13, was on the rear of the motorcycle. Upon exiting his vehicle, DiNardo said the operator spun his tires and accelerated at a high rate of speed southbound on Oakland Beach Ave., with the juvenile still on the rear of the motorcycle.

Based on the reckless operation, DiNardo initiated pursuit and followed the vehicle, clocking it at speeds in excess of 90 mph. After about six-tenths of a mile, the operator came to a stop and placed his hands in the air.

DiNardo said he immediately escorted the operator, who was identified as Zachary Graichen, 31, of 87 Barstow Street, Providence, from the motorcycle onto the ground and placed him in handcuffs. Graichen was not injured during the pursuit or his apprehension, nor was his passenger, who was identified as his niece.

DiNardo said he located a green leafy substance resembling marijuana on Graichen’s person. The substance later tested positive for 9.2 grams of marijuana. DiNardo said it should be noted Officer Mitchel Voyer and Sergeant Valliere arrived shortly after the pursuit and were advised of the situation. Voyer transported the juvenile female to Warwick Police headquarters, while Sgt. Valliere remained on scene to await a tow. A motor vehicle inventory search was completed but revealed nothing of value.

Graichen was transported to police headquarters, where he was charged and given a summons for the violations of reckless driving and driving without a license, with a District Court date. He was also issued violations for operating an unregistered motor vehicle; improper use of registration or title certificate; and speed 11 mph in excess of posted speed limit, as well as for possession of marijuana one ounce or less, with a Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal court date. Graichen was held for court the next morning.

Uncle's got a nice history of domestic assault and driving without/on a suspended license- parents may want to reconsider letting their daughter hang out with this wizard, if they care at all.

    Please stay in Providence.
