FRAUDULENT USE OF CREDIT CARD

On May 24, Detective James Medeiros met a male subject identified as Matthew Mayer, 20, of 25 Manson Avenue, Warwick, in the lobby of the Warwick Police Department. Medeiros had previously contacted Mayer and requested he come to the station after his name came up in an investigation, to which Mayer agreed and arrived on his own at noon.

Medeiros informed Mayer he was investigating a complaint of credit card fraud and said Mayer’s name came up as the person responsible. Mayer said he was drunk on the night in question, April 18, and did not remember much. He said he purchased some items at the Seasons Shell station on Elmwood Avenue with a card he got from a white male subject who was outside of the store. He said the unknown male wanted him to purchase cigarettes and he would give Mayer a pack.

While Mayer filled out a written statement, Medeiros left the room to review store video for the case, which showed the male suspect at the counter for some time. It appears he takes a card out of a bag he is holding and swipes it several times. Medeiros said it was noted that three transactions were logged on the victim’s account.

Upon re-interviewing Mayer and asking how he came into possession of the credit card, which had been stolen from a car in the general area of the Shell station, Mayer continued to deny any involvement with the larceny of the credit card from the vehicle and maintained he got it from a homeless white male outside the Shell station.

Mayer was processed and charged with one count of fraudulent use of a credit card.

TOOLS STOLEN

On May 27 at 9:06 a.m., Officer Scott Chanthaphouvong was dispatched to Warwick Police headquarters in reference to a larceny complaint.

Upon arrival, Chanthaphouvong met with the victim, who said he parked his work van at the Park & Ride on Centerville Road on May 25 around 3 p.m. When he went to pick up his van the next day around 3 a.m., he noticed the lock on the passenger side slider door was broken and many of his tools were missing. Among the missing tools, were a table saw, skill saw, tile saw, screw gun, finish nail gun and belt sander for a total value of $2,000.

The man said he wanted the incident documented for his insurance company. The report was forwarded to detectives. No suspects or witnesses.

PANTING TERRIER LEFT IN VEHICLE

On May 26 at 11:30 a.m., Animal Control Officer Paul Keenan was dispatched to the parking lot of Macy’s at Warwick Mall on the report of a dog in a brown Nissan Murano with Florida license plates. Dispatch reported that the caller said the dog was panting inside the vehicle, although the windows were down and the dog had access to water.

Upon arrival, Keenan located the vehicle and spoke with mall security, who said they spotted the dog in the vehicle at 11:09 and had the owner paged over the mall’s public address system several times. Keenan said the dog appeared to be a brown and white terrier mix that was panting heavily. He said the windows were rolled down, but the dog did not have adequate access to water – the only water available was for the dog was in a cup in the center console cup holder. Keenan then radioed Dispatch for the current outside temperature, which was reported as 83 degrees Fahrenheit. Using his infrared thermometer, Keenan said the temperature inside the vehicle was measured at 103.

After waiting approximately 10 minutes for the owner to appear, Keenan opened the unlocked back door and confiscated the dog. He left a note on the vehicle’s windshield advising the owner that it was 103 degrees inside the vehicle and the dog was going to be held at the Warwick Animal Shelter. The dog was then transported and secured at the shelter.

Keenan advised shelter director Ann Corvin to contact him when the owner appears to claim the dog. While dropping off another dog at the shelter at 1:30 p.m., Keenan was advised the owner was there to claim her dog. The woman, identified as Pamela Childs, 61, of 11 Cross Road, Narragansett, said she normally leaves the air condition on in the vehicle, but she did not think she had enough gas to leave it on while she was in the mall.

Childs was advised she would be receiving a ticket for violation of animal confinement in a vehicle (fine not to exceed $500), with a mandatory Warwick Municipal Court appearance. She signed the violation without incident.

DUI

On May 27 at 2:01 a.m., Officer Christopher Cote was driving westbound on West Shore Road, when he observed a black 2007 GMC driving eastbound on West Shore Road cross the white fog line as it passed him, so he turned around to follow it. As he caught up to it, he noticed the vehicle driving on the white fog line then drift left back into its lane before once again swerving to the right and crossing over the line. This happened multiple times before Cote conducted a motor vehicle stop in the vicinity of 490 West Shore Rd.

Cote made contact with the operator, who was identified as Garrett J. McCormick, 23, of 41 Peeptoad Road, Warwick. He was able to provide his license, registration and insurance. When asked where he was coming from, he said he was coming from a friend’s house on Tidewater Drive and was on his way home to Peeptoad Rd. When advised of why he was stopped, Cote said McCormick became upset and said he was not speeding or swerving. Cote said he was swerving, but McCormick continued to disagree and said he was being harassed.

While speaking with McCormick, Cote said he could smell the odor associated with the consumption of alcoholic beverages coming from his breath. His speech was slurred and he also had bloodshot eyes. When asked how much he had to drink, McCormick said he didn’t have anything to drink. Cote then returned to his cruiser to conduct further checks and requested backup. Officer DeDonato arrived shortly thereafter.

When asked if he would submit to a series of standardized field sobriety tests, McCormick initially did not answer and Cote had to open the car door and escort him outside. He said McCormick was unsteady on his feet. He again asked about the sobriety tests and McCormick said he would only take one.

After scoring a total of six out of six clues on the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, which indicated impairment, McCormick refused to take any further field sobriety tests, but he did agree to take a portable breath test, which registered a 0.174. At this time, McCormick was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI and was searched incident to arrest.

McCormick was transported to Warwick Police headquarters, while Officer DeDonato remained on scene and performed a motor vehicle inventory while waiting for a tow truck. Upon arrival at headquarters, McCormick agreed to take a Breathalyzer test, with B.A.C. results of 0.175 and 0.173. He was later fingerprinted and photographed.

McCormick was issued a summons for DUI of liquor or drugs second offense .15/greater, as well as a summons for laned roadway violations. He was secured a cell and held for the next session of Third District Court.
