STOLEN BRACELET

On June 8 at 2:11 p.m., Officer Brian Murray was dispatched to the gift shop at Kent Hospital, 455 Toll Gate Road, for a past shoplifting.

Murray was met by the manager of the gift shop, who said one of the workers noticed a Dune bracelet missing from the display. After viewing the video surveillance, a customer, who was described as a white female with long brown hair in her 50s, was witnessed removing the bracelet from the stand and then exiting the store without paying for the merchandise. The value of the bracelet was $39.99.

It appeared the suspect was an outpatient due to her hospital bracelet, along with paperwork she was holding. Security personnel checked the hospital for the woman, but they were unable to locate her or obtain her identity. A photo of the woman was given to Murray, who entered it into records at Warwick police headquarters.

OAKLAND BEACH GAZEBO DAMAGED

On June 6 at 9:35 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of the Oakland Beach sea wall for the report of a malicious damage in progress. The reporting party said around 9:30, a bunch of kids were in the garden outside in the gazebo. He heard the kids kicking the wood panel and the railings. He said the kid doing the kicking was wearing a white shirt and tan shorts. The man yelled at the kids to stop and they shouted back at him telling him not to call the police. They then went over to the sea wall and the officers showed up.

The man pointed out to officers who had been doing the kicking. That person was identified as Devan Guilbault, 21, of 109 Ruggles Street, Providence. Officer Jacob Elderkin said it should be noted Guilbault was intoxicated. Elderkin said he had contact with Guilbault earlier in his shift and had given him numerous warnings about being loud and disorderly at the car show that was taking place at the sea wall.

After another officer arrived on scene to stay with Guilbault, Elderkin went to the gazebo to inspect the damage. There was extensive damage done to the railing, which had been kicked off in two separate spots. Numerous side panels were broken as well. A series of digital photographs were taken.

Guilbault was charged with one count of malicious damage. He was taken into custody without incident, however once he was placed in the cruiser, Elderkin said Guilbault became extremely uncooperative and started slamming into the back of the partition. He was given a warning to stop and was restrained in a seatbelt. Guilbault was transported to Warwick police headquarters, where he was fingerprinted, photographed, processed, and held due to being a violator.

Elderkin said it was determined that the owner of the gazebo was the Jonah Center, which wanted to press charges upon being informed of the damage. The gazebo was a gift from the Oakland Beach Association.

Director of Public Works David Picozzi was contacted regarding the damage. Picozzi estimated the damage to be valued at $100 and said he would be directing city personnel to make the necessary repairs.

MISSING LANDSCAPING EQUIPMENT

On June 3 at 8:35 a.m., Officer Julio Benros responded to Warwick Avenue for the report of a larceny from a trailer.

Upon arrival, Benros met with the victim, who said some of his landscaping equipment and tools had been stolen from within a locked trailer, which is owned by himself and his business.

Benros checked the trailer and saw that the hasp pin and latching mechanism had been sheared from the body of the trailer while the locks were still in place.

The following items were reported stolen: one Stihl trimmer valued at $320.99; one orange and gray Stihl chainsaw model MS271 with 18-inch bar valued at $409.95; one orange and gray Stihl chainsaw model MS 193T with 14-inch bar valued at $339.95; two red Max fit hedge trimmers model CHT220 valued at $279.95 each; and one red Max leaf blower model EBZ8500. Detectives later responded to the scene and processed it.

Benros said he canvassed the area, but was unable to contact or find any witnesses to the larceny. There were no suspects.

DISORDERLY & SIMPLE ASSAULT

On June 2 at 4:58 p.m., Officer Christian Vargas was dispatched to the Wendy’s bus stop for a report of a disorderly male on a RIPTA bus. Communications advised that the bus driver called RIPTA dispatch, saying a male was giving her a hard time.

Vargas was on an unrelated call in the Chuck E. Cheese parking lot and responded. He said he saw a bus with its hazards on stopped on Route 2 directly in front of the On the Border restaurant. Vargas said he was approached by the bus driver, who was visibly upset. She was pointing toward Wal-Mart, saying a male had taken off in that direction after he shoved her. She described the male as being white and wearing a red shirt and red hat.

Vargas said he saw a male matching the description and approached him. The man confirmed he had just gotten off the bus but claimed he didn’t know what was going on and said he’d been having a bad day. The man, who was later identified as Matthew Andrews, 42, of 107 Old Great Road, Smithfield, said he was using some curse words with an unknown female he had met on the bus. He said the bus driver acted like “everybody’s mother” and told him to stop cursing and asked him to get off the bus. He said the female he was talking to got off the bus, so he did as well to speak with her, then attempted to get back on. He claimed the bus driver told him he couldn’t get back on and put her hand out and hit him in the neck area. Vargas said there were no marks on the subject.

Additional officers responded to the area and Vargas had Andrews sit in his cruiser while he spoke with the female that had been speaking with Andrews.

The woman told Vargas she saw a guy with a red hat put his hands on the bus driver. He pushed his way back onto the bus after the driver asked them to both get off the bus.

The bus driver said Andrews was repeatedly using filthy language and there was a small child about five to six years old with his mother on the bus, so she told him to stop cursing. He reportedly told her to “just drive the [expletive] bus.” She then stopped the bus and told him and the female to get off the bus.

After doing so, the driver said Andrews tried to get back on. As she was walking back onto the bus with her right hand on the handrail, she said Andrews put his head under her arm and with the entire left side of his body, he pushed her, causing her to lose her grip. After that, she said Andrews shoved her out of his way, saying he paid for the bus and wasn’t getting off. She then called police.

After the driver positively identified Andrews as the man that shoved her, he was taken into custody and charged with disorderly conduct and simple assault. At that point, Vargas said Andrews became irate. He was transported to Warwick police headquarters, where he was processed and held for the morning session of court as a bail violator, as he had been released on bail for an unrelated domestic charge earlier that day. During transport, Vargas said Andrews was verbally combative and made veiled threats toward him.

Andrews has been a frequent-flyer nuisance offender since he was 18, and I'll eat a police cruiser if he wasn't a juvenile delinquent before he was an adult one; we should just be grateful he doesn't LIVE in Warwick.

Sounds like he and Guilbault are in desperate need of non-professional wall-to-wall (seawall?) counseling...
