Warwick: A generous community

During a time when the economy is down and citizens are struggling, we at the Warwick Beacon find it impressive and endearing that people throughout the state are digging into their wallets in an attempt to make the lives of others better.

In the last few weeks, we’ve published stories and press releases about events and causes in which organizations and businesses have raised funds, often for people they don’t even know.

For instance, 53 participants, including staff and Y members alike, raised $5,600 for people in the community who are in need during an event at the Kent County YMCA on Centerville Road last week. That was part of their 2012 Financial Assistance Program that has raised more than $260,000 since the beginning of the year.

But that’s not all.

To honor the life of Elanna L. Zuller, a Pilgrim student who died last year in a car accident, the Zuller family planned and took part in a motorcycle run through Rhode Island this past Saturday.

After the run, they joined friends at Biki’s Gathering Spot at 2077 West Shore Rd. and enjoyed an evening of remembrance and entertainment.

As a result, they raised more than $5,000, which will be donated to the Elanna L. Zuller Memorial Sports Fund, which is awarded annually to a Warwick high school senior.

As we said, at a time when people are tightening their fiscal belts, it’s heartening to know we have a community that is always thinking of others worse off than they are.
