Warwick North softball one win away from World Series

The Warwick North 11/12-year-old All-Star softball squad is one win away from making history – not only in Warwick, but in Rhode Island, as well.

Warwick North is currently in Bristol, Conn., where it is competing in the East Regional after making it there with a 20-3 win over Cranston National-Budlong in the state final less than two weeks ago.

It is now proving that it isn’t only the best team in the state, but maybe in the whole region.

Warwick North is just one win away from making it to the World Series in Oregon, powering its way through the competition with wins over Maine, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware to earn a berth in the finals.

The championship is scheduled for today at 3 p.m. Warwick North is the only undefeated team left in the tournament, so it would need to be beaten twice. If it loses the first game, a second game will be played at 6 p.m.

The team is confident heading into the region final, as all facets of the game have been clicking on all cylinders for Warwick North.

“We ask them to just go out and play their game, and that’s what they’ve been doing,” Warwick North manager Kevin DeTroia said. “They’ve just been lights out all the way around. The pitching has been right on, our defense has been very strong for our pitchers and the bats have been right there for us.”

In Warwick North’s 8-3 winners’ bracket final win over Delaware on Monday, Maddy D’Amato and Dyonna Rodas each drove in two runs at the plate.

In the circle, Sierra Ricci tossed a gem. She surrendered three runs over the first two innings before shutting out Delaware over the final four frames.

Ricci and Emily Carter have been splitting the duties in the circle for Warwick North in the tournament, as they’ve pitched two games apiece.

If Warwick North were to win the tournament, it would be the first team from Rhode Island to go to the World Series since North Providence West in 1979.

Furthermore, it would be the first trip to the World Series for a team out of the softball program which was formerly Warwick West Side.

The pressure isn’t getting to the team, though.

DeTroia noted that his team would take the day off from softball on Wednesday to take a mental break.

They will then refocus on Thursday morning with an hour of practice prior to the championship game at 3 p.m. – a game where Warwick North could make history.

“They’re representing R.I. in a classy way,” DeTroia said.
