Warwick Police: The real deal

To the Editor:

I’m writing to publicly thank the Warwick Police Department for graciously accepting me to participate in the most recent Citizens Police Academy. I’m no stranger to public policy issues in general but haven’t had the opportunity to explore something as complex as a city police department in the way that the two-month CPA offers.

The two community police officers who coordinated the program, Officers Steve Nelson and Dan Maggiacomo, were great, and during the program they presented numerous other department members to show us their various areas of specialty. As a Warwick resident, I went into the program knowing that Warwick PD is nationally accredited and responsive, but not really much more than that.

Of course, first and foremost, these folks are cops, which makes it even easier to appreciate them opening up their department and functions, in general terms, to a group of citizens. I came away realizing that from our chief on down, what a great bunch of people we have in our police department who are truly dedicated to what they do and to their many individual areas of specialty. Of course in this program our police department puts their best foot forward, but you simply can’t fake good morale, detail and a knowledgeable confidence for that many hours and weeks. The Warwick PD is the real deal, and they do it 24/7, for about six percent of our city’s budget.

From the focus of a SWAT team who are able to convene and respond very quickly when needed, to the big-picture safety concerns of our traffic division and many, many other department elements, some of whom are called to assist other municipal, state police and even federal law enforcement efforts, to providing for a secure community, it’s easy to see how we owe these men and women a good degree of gratitude.
