Warwick Police join in ‘click it or ticket’ mobilization starting May 18

Posted

The Warwick Police Department will join local law enforcement officers and highway safety advocates for a Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization, May 18 through May 24.

Officers will ticket motorists who fail to wear their seat belts – both day and night

With proper seat belt use, research shows that the risk of fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants is reduced by 45 percent, and the risk of moderate to serious injury is reduced by 50 percent.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), seat belts saved more than 12,500 lives nationwide in 2010 alone.

Nationally in 2010, 51 percent of the 22,187 passenger vehicle occupants who were killed in motor vehicle crashes were not wearing seat belts at the time of their fatal crashes.

“The Warwick Police Department is strongly supporting the Click It Or Ticket mobilization May 18 to 24,” said Lieutenant Michael Gilbert. “We will be out in force to remind drivers and occupants to always wear their seat belts, both day and night.”

The fine for not wearing a seat belt is $85.

Here come the illegal road blocks called "checkpoints".

Why is it another adults business if I chose not to wear my belt? What business is it of yours? I can only cause harm to myself. Mind your own business! The only cops who write these tickets are ones that are on overtime. Talk about money hungry.

2010 49 % lived that were not wearing their seat belt. It's the type of crash. I do wear my seat belt ,but I did not think the government should be telling and forcing you to do so.

This is another cash cow for the city and State. Are they trying to keep people safe or raise revenue? I always wear my seatbelt but it should be my choice. My children do not have a choice, I make them wear them because I am responsible not because the Gov't tells me. The German Government set up checkpoints about 70 years ago and became very intrusive into the lives of their people.

Wish they would stop trying to make us swallow the excuse that it's about public safety. It's about revenue for the state, it's not about safety. Otherwise there would be a law requiring motorcycle drivers to wear motorcycle helmets. Where do you ever hear of an accident where the driver who was hit was hurt because the driver who hit them wasn't wearing THEIR seat belt? Buckle your kids but if you don't make motorcycle drivers wear helmets then why make car drivers wear seat belts?
