Warwick child killed in Cranston accident

Just before 7 p.m. on Sunday night the Cranston Police were called to investigate an accident involving a very young pedestrian who was struck in the vicinity of Broadmoor Road and Somerset Road. When officers arrived, they found that a 3-year-old Warwick girl had been struck by an SUV being operated by Anthony Momplaisir, 34, of Dexter Street in Providence.

The child was immediately transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital where it was later announced that she had died from the injuries sustained in the accident. Initial reports indicate that the child was attending a 40-year-old’s birthday party when she ran out into the street and was struck by the SUV when it could not stop in time.

The Police Traffic Unit is still investigating the accident and said it does not appear as if speed or alcohol were factors in the accident. Momplaisir was, however, charged with operating a motor vehicle on a suspended license, obstruction of justice and a Superior Court bench warrant for the arrest of Momplaisir for failing to appear for an arraignment for a Providence charge.

He will be arraigned on the new Cranston charges in Third District Court today.
