Warwick man admits to unemployment insurance fraud

Posted

A Warwick man has admitted to fraudulently collecting more than $10,000 in unemployment insurance benefits.

Joseph A. Carani, 46, with a last known address of 134 Hawksley Ave., entered a no contest plea on one count of obtaining money under false pretenses on April 9 in Superior Court, according to the office of Attorney General Peter Kilmartin.

Prosecutors say between Nov. 15, 2008 and Aug. 6, 2011, Carani failed to report weekly earnings to the state Department of Labor and Training while employed with Samsyd Windows & Doors Co. in Cranston.

Carani was ordered to pay $10,305 in restitution, and received a 10-year suspended sentence with probation.

“Today’s plea announcement marks the second in the past week my office has successfully prosecuted an individual for unemployment insurance fraud in Rhode Island. We will continue to aggressively prosecute anyone who abuses and defrauds our safety net programs,” said Kilmartin.”
