Warwick Police report the arrest of a Warwick man on multiple charges after a fast chase around 8:49 p.m. on Saturday.

Police said they observed the man’s vehicle traveling southbound on Warwick Avenue at a high rate of speed and pursued it. They said the vehicle was weaving in and out of lanes as it traveled through Hoxsie Four Corners. The suspect vehicle entered the intersection crossing the center lane, passing stopped vehicles, and struck a vehicle that was turning onto Warwick Avenue, causing it to rollover. The suspect continued west on Airport Road while pursued by an officer. The suspect lost control at the intersection of Airport and Post Roads, striking three other vehicles before coming to rest against a retaining wall. The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was subdued by several officers.

Anthony Diaz, 23, of Warwick was suspected to be under the influence of liquor or drugs. Diaz was charged with a number of violations, including leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving and eluding police, DUI, domestic assault, violation of a no contact order, resisting arrest, simple assault on a police officer and a variety of other motor vehicle violations. Lt. Michael Gilbert of the Warwick Police Traffic division said there might be more charges after they have completed their investigation and the Attorney General’s office decides what charges they want to pursue.

Court records show a variety of charges on Diaz, including a five-year suspended sentence for a weapons charge in 2010 and numerous domestic offenses and lesser charges.

“We got a warrant to test his blood,” said Gilbert. “The blood was taken for medical reasons but we can’t test it without a warrant [or Diaz’s permission]. We got the warrant.”

Gilbert said Diaz’s blood would be tested for the presence of alcohol and other controlled substances like marijuana, amphetamines, cocaine and opiates.

“As far as I know, he’s still being held at the ACI for being a probation violator,” said Gilbert. “There might be more coming after we’re finished with the investigation.”

Gilbert said that the infant and the mother, who were in the car, suffered only minor injuries, as did the adults in the other vehicles who were taken to Kent or Rhode Island Hospital. The infant was taken to Hasbro for a period of observation.

Any person with more information related to the incident and accident is requested to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division at 468-4343.
