Watch out, there may be a swarm of new lawyers moving into the state after GoodCall ranked the Warwick/Providence metro area the 36th best area in the country for new and aspiring law graduates to begin their careers. GoodCall is a data-science group providing information for pre- and post-students to navigate college and career choices.

It began as a tool through which students and their families could find the schools best suited for them and how to pay for it. It quickly evolved to offer studies on different careers and majors and the cities in the country best suited for them.

In their latest study, released at the end of June, GoodCall looked at all the major metropolitan areas in the United States, calculating not only average salary but also the cost of living and “employment attractiveness,” or density of available jobs, to create a ranking.

Unsurprisingly, the New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania tri-state area came in first with an average salary of $148,140, and a housing affordability, based on the percentage of income spent on rent, of 10.04 percent. In 36th, Rhode Island had an average salary of $104,300 and only 7.5 percent spent on rent.

Neighbors to the north in Boston ranked slightly above in 18th, with a high average salary of $130,150, but a higher percentage spent on rent, 11.03 percent.

Mayor Scott Avedisian said this report comes as “good news for our community and the state.”

“With T.F. Green Airport, the Interlink and quick access to the highway, Warwick provides convenience for professionals and is a city with a great quality of life to offer those who live and work here.”

Paul Southerland, lead analyst at GoodCall, said, “Recent graduates often flood large cities in search of big salaries. Our goal was to find places where lawyers and recent law school graduates could find not only competitive salaries but also a lower cost of living and a solid job market

All of the research for the study came from the latest data from United States Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Indeed.com.

Roger Williams University Law School may have just as much to do with the area’s attractiveness as a good balance between salary and living costs.

Kendra Levesque, a native of New Hampshire, first came to Rhode Island to attend Roger Williams and now says she has no intentions of leaving.

Through the university Levesque had a corporate internship with GTech and after graduation she was hired by the tech company as their corporate counsel.

“Roger Williams does such a good job of creating connections in the legal community, connections that are really beneficial to their students,” Levesque said.

She said because the state is smaller so is the legal community, but that creates a friendlier atmosphere, especially for those just graduating from law school.
