Warwick parochial schools prepped for Catholic School Week

Warwick’s parochial schools are gearing up for Catholic School Week with open houses starting this Sunday to showcase their services to the community.

St. Kevin at 39 Cathedral Road will hold its open house from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. St. Kevin Principal Roger Parent said attendees will get to see the whole school regardless of the grade the student is in. The school models its open house like Bishop Hendricken’s, Parent said, so current students and former students who are now in high school will serve as “ambassadors” giving guided tours of the school.

Parent said St. Kevin’s enrollment has increased for the past five years. Currently, 246 students are enrolled at the school. Kindergarten through 8th grade tuition is $4,400 a year for parishioners, and non-parishioners pay $4,800 a year (preschool tuition varies depending on schedules parents choose for their children). This year, Parent said the school added a second first grade class and plans to keep that group of students in two classes as they move on.

During Catholic School Week, St. Kevin will host guest speakers including Mayor Scott Avedisian, Mike Montecalvo from Channel 12 and three religious speakers.

St. Peter Tri-Parish at 120 Mayfair Road will have an open house from 12:30 to 2 p.m. after their special 11 a.m. mass. Its Catholic School week will be a busy one, with a Geography Bee, a pep rally, a buddy day, science fair judging and parent viewing, student appreciation day, guest speakers, and a spelling bee at St. Mary’s in Cranston. Fifth grader Annabelle Tracy and sixth grader Hannah DeFeo will represent St. Peter in the bee, and a teacher appreciation day is all set to take place. Tuition there runs at $4,000 but also differs for preschool.

St. Rose of Lima at 200 Brentwood Avenue will hold an open house from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Catholic School Week activities include Student Appreciation and Dress Down Day, Dine Out at Uno’s in Warwick, Day of Service Dress Down, Catholics Around the World Day, Teacher Appreciation Day, and a mass at school with a chorus performance.

St. Rose has 255 students. Non-parishioner tuition is $5,000 per child K-8 and $4,350 for parishioners.

At Bishop Hendricken High School, their daily prayer during Catholic Week will be dedicated to a different aspect of what they feel makes Catholic education special.

“This normally regards our mission, which is to bring every member of our community closer to God through total education of each person,” said President John Jackson.

Hendricken will have a special mass for students on Wednesday and, later, students will get to make their own sundaes.

Additionally, at Our Lady of Mercy in East Greenwich, their week will focus on the theme of “Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” Like the other schools, they will have a student appreciation day. Students will also participate in outreach projects like collecting canned soups for the OLM Parish Outreach, gently used games for McAuley Village and socks, hats and mittens for the Midnight Moment Outreach, a “Christ-centered outreach to the people in the streets of Providence.”

St. Rose and Hendricken also noted they’d be participating in a school choice rally today at the State House – Hendricken is even bringing a jazz ensemble to the rotunda to play at 1:15.
