Warwick partnership had role in upgrades to Cranston Senior Center kitchen

Celebrating the completion of upgrades to the facility’s kitchen, officials gathered at the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center last week for a ribbon cutting ceremony.

“It was such a team effort,” Executive Director of Senior Services Sue Stenhouse said. “This was a huge undertaking.”

“It’s a fantastic new facility,” Mayor Allan Fung said, praising the efforts of Ray Sinapi, the center’s chef and nutrition director, and his staff to “provide a nutritious meal for everyone.”

Stenhouse said the kitchen, in which meals are prepared for roughly 30 sites across the state, was sorely in need of upgrades. It was original to the building, she said, which is now in its 26th year.

The condition of the floor was a significant issue, and Stenhouse said funding from the city provided for the installation of a non-slip, quarry tile floor and the correction of drainage tilts.

“If it was not for the mayor’s support, we would not be having this great celebration,” she said.

In addition, through the center’s Advisory Board, a $24,000 investment was made in two steamers and a skillet, while a $10,000 memorial donation left by the late Tom Mazaka, a former volunteer, provided for new stainless steel wall coverings, shelving and aluminum tables.

Stenhouse said the center is also in line to receive a new over through Blackstone Health, a division of VNA of Care New England that administers Cranston’s meals program. The purchase of a new ice-making machine is additionally planned.

The timing of the project was made possible through the new partnership through which the Cranston facility provides meals for Warwick’s Pilgrim Senior Center. Between late September and early November, the Cranston kitchen operation relocated to the Warwick center to allow for the work to proceed.

“We needed to have a place of operations,” Stenhouse said. “It all worked out…We didn’t have one glitch.”

Stenhouse and Fung thanked Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian, Pilgrim Senior Center Director Meg Underwood, the city of Cranston’s maintenance team and Purchasing Department and the Cranston center’s staff, volunteers and members for their support.
