Warwick players help URI to ECWHL title

Four players from Warwick helped lead the University of Rhode Island women’s hockey club team to the Eastern Collegiate Women’s Hockey League Championship this past weekend. The title is the 10th ECWHL crown for the Rams program and it qualifies them for the American Collegiate Hockey Association National Tournament in March.

Toll Gate grad and former Warwick Lady Titans standout Sydney Collins was named tournament MVP as the Rams beat Vermont 4-0 and the University of Massachusetts 2-0. Collins had a goal in the championship game win over UMass, which avenged a pair of regular-season losses.

The other Warwick players are former Lady Titans Brianna Accetturo and Emily Fox, and Bay View graduate Megan McGhie.

Former La Salle standout Lauren Lanoie scored all four goals in the win over Vermont, with goalie Kayla DiLorenzo recording the shutout. Cassie Catlow scored the other goal in the championship game and DiLorenzo notched her second straight shutout with 24 saves.

The Rams have a game Saturday at home against New Hampshire at 2 p.m. The national tournament is scheduled for March 12-16 at the University of Delaware.
