The renewed East Greenwich Athletic Hall of Fame will hold its second annual banquet Saturday, May 14, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the East Greenwich Firemen’s Hall on Queen Street in East Greenwich.
Being inducted in this year’s class are three outstanding women athletes and three outstanding men. From the distaff side are Angela Bertholdt, a record-setting track athlete, not just at East Greenwich, but also at URI and the World Police & Fire Games.
Meaghan Almon played four sports at EGHS, including boys’ baseball and later went on to star in softball at Hofstra University, where she was an All-Conference performer and started 224 games for The Pride.
Casie Rhodes was a three-sport star in high school, who went on to have great success at the Community College of Rhode Island and is in its Hall of Fame already. She later went on to have more success at Salem State College.
Don Bowen was a standout basketball player for the Avengers, who has coached at his alma mater for over 30 years. He led teams to championships not only as a player, but also as a coach.
Tom McCarthy, who earned 10 varsity letters for the Avs in hockey, golf and football, moved to the Canterbury School, where he continued to shine in hockey and football. He ended up skating for Providence College.
Ken Van Luvan, a talented iceman for the Avengers during their heyday of high school hockey, went on to Canton Tech J.C. and led it to a National Junior College hockey championship.
Also being given a Special Contribution to Athletics is Bill Geary, a longtime Avengers booster, who was a jack-of-all-trades in the way he helped Crimson teams from the sidelines to the stat lines.
Tickets are still available for this event. They are $25. For more information contact: Guy Asadorian at guyasa821@gmail.com or Jeff Santos at jsantoseg@verizon.net. NOTE: Geary, Rhodes and Almon are all Warwick residents.
