Warwick squads run well at JV states

All three Warwick girls’ indoor track teams competed in the junior varsity state meet at the Providence Career and Technical Academy on Monday, and each fared well.

Toll Gate led the way with 23 points and an eighth-place finish, while Pilgrim came in 11th with 14 points and Warwick Vets came in 21st with six points.

The Titans were led by a strong showing in the 1,000 meter run. Tess Russo took first place in a time of 3:24.48, which was nearly five seconds better than second-place runner Jordan Silva of North Kingstown. Toll Gate’s Stine Hildeness also ran well, coming in fourth place in the same event.

In the 4x800 relay, Toll Gate added six points to its score with a third-place finish.

The 4x200 relay was tight between the Titans and Pilgrim, as the Pats ran their way to fourth place, just .08 seconds ahead of fifth-place Toll Gate.

Toll Gate also got a point from Alyssa Jordan, who came in sixth in the weight throw.

Pilgrim’s top performer was Caitlin Blanchard, who came in first in the weight throw with a throw of 30 feet. She narrowly edged La Salle’s Katherine Packham by half-an-inch.

Scoring all six points for Vets was Elizabeth Paras. Paras had an impressive performance in the 3,000 meter run, taking third place in a time of 11:49.42.

Hawks take second

Bishop Hendricken took second to Classical at the boys’ JV state championship on Tuesday. The Hawks finished with 65 points to the Purple’s 73. Toll Gate finished ninth and Vets was 15th.

The Hawks had 14 place-winners, including four first-place finishers. Lee Moses won the long jump, Chris Celona took first in the weight throw, Derek Vadnais won the hurdles and Ron Gaynor finished tied with Vets’ Jonathan Nordin for first in the hurdles. The Hawks also won the 4x200 and 4x400 relays.

Also for the Hawks, Ben Murphy took second in the high jump, Alex Doherty took second in the 1,500, Alex Cerbo finished third in the shot put, Cory Woodbine placed fourth in the weight throw, Shawn McAssey took fourth in the shot put, Jacob Magiera grabbed fourth in the 3,000, Eddie Barber finished fifth in the shot put, Chris Hook took fifth in the 1,000, Nick Carroll took sixth in the weight throw and Matt Lombardi finished sixth in the 600.

Joe Frost led the way for Toll Gate with a first-place finish in the 3,000. Tom Martella added a fourth in the hurdles, and Javier Restrepo took fourth in the 600.

Vets was led by Nordin, who tied Gaynor for first in the hurdles and also took seventh in the 300. Joe Spaziano added a third in the weight throw and a sixth in the shot put.

Alex Malm led Pilgrim with a second-place finish in the shot put.

    I did not run the hurdles. The event Nordin (me) placed in was the 55 meter dash. Thank you.
